One of the most common concerns customers have when hiring or buying a shipping container is whether it can actually be delivered to their site. Perhaps you have a narrow driveway, limited vehicle access, a small yard, a busy street outside your property or a space that sits behind a wall or fence.
At first glance, these locations can seem unsuitable for container delivery. But the good news is that many tight-access sites can still be reached with the right planning, equipment and experience. Specialist delivery vehicles, careful site checks and HIAB crane lifting can make it possible to position containers in places where standard delivery would be difficult - or impossible.
What counts as a ‘tight space’?
For the purposes of this article, a tight space is any location where there is limited room for a delivery vehicle to access, turn, unload or position a container safely.
This could include narrow driveways, restricted entrances, small yards, limited turning circles or confined residential streets. In commercial and industrial sites, it could be a busy service yard, a construction site with narrow access points, or a space behind a building.
Overhead restrictions can also create challenges. Low branches, rooflines, bridges, overhead cables, lamp posts or signage can all affect whether a delivery vehicle or crane can operate safely.
Ground conditions matter too. A site may be physically wide enough, but uneven, soft or sloping ground can make positioning more difficult. That is why every tight-access delivery needs to be considered as a whole, rather than simply measuring whether a container will fit.
How container delivery works in practice
Container delivery usually starts with a basic site assessment. This helps the supplier understand where the container needs to go, how much space is available and what equipment will be required.
The customer may be asked to provide photos, measurements and details about access, ground conditions and any obstacles. This information helps identify whether the container can be delivered using a standard vehicle or whether specialist lifting equipment is needed.
Once the delivery method is agreed, the container is transported to site and offloaded into position. On straightforward sites, the container may be placed directly from the vehicle. For tighter or more awkward spaces, a HIAB crane may be used to lift and position the container more precisely.
The aim is always the same: to deliver the container safely, efficiently and as close as possible to the exact location required.
Using HIAB cranes for precise placement
A HIAB is a lorry-mounted crane used to lift heavy items from the vehicle and place them into position. For shipping container deliveries, this can be especially useful when access is restricted or the container needs to be positioned with care.
Instead of needing the delivery vehicle to drive directly into the final location, a HIAB can lift the container from the lorry and move it into place. This can make it possible to position containers over fences, walls, low barriers or other obstacles, depending on the site layout and lifting conditions.
HIAB delivery is particularly helpful where there is not enough room for a vehicle to manoeuvre around the site. Rather than requiring a large open space for unloading, the crane can be used to place the container exactly where it is needed.
This level of control is one of the main reasons HIAB delivery is used for tight spaces. It allows for more precise placement, reduces the need for vehicle access to the final position and can make container delivery possible in locations that initially seem too restricted.
Common tight-access delivery scenarios
This type of container delivery is common, across both domestic and commercial sites.
For homeowners, one of the most frequent examples is placing a container in a back garden or side area during a renovation, house move or building project. The container may need to be lifted over a wall, fence or boundary where there is no direct vehicle access.
Commercial sites often need containers positioned behind units, in service yards or in areas where access is limited by buildings, parked vehicles, gates or loading bays. While you might need a container for stock, tools, equipment or temporary storage, but the space available may not allow for standard delivery.
Construction sites can also present access challenges. Entry points may be narrow, ground conditions may change during the project, and materials or machinery may restrict where a vehicle can turn. HIAB delivery can help place the container where it will be most useful without disrupting the rest of the site.
Urban properties are another common example. On-street parking, narrow roads, nearby buildings and limited unloading space can all make delivery more complex. But with good planning and clear access on the day, many of these issues can be managed.
Preparing your site: ground conditions matter
Before a shipping container is delivered, it is important to make sure the final position is suitable. A container should be placed on a solid, level base that can support the weight of the container and its contents, so the spot needs to be carefully planned. As poor ground conditions can cause problems after delivery.
If the surface is soft, uneven or unstable, the container may settle, twist or become difficult to use. This in turn can affect how well the doors open and close, and it may create long-term stability issues.

Access checks before delivery day

You should also look at the area around the planned position. Are there parked vehicles in the way? Are there walls, fences, bins, garden furniture, machinery or materials that could restrict the lift? Is there enough room for the delivery vehicle to stop safely?
Clear communication with your supplier is preferred. Photos, videos and accurate measurements can help our delivery team assess the site before arriving. And it is always better to flag potential issues early so the right vehicle and lifting method can be planned.
As the customer, you will usually need to prepare the site, clear the access route and make sure the delivery area is ready. This may include moving vehicles, unlocking gates, cutting back overhanging branches or ensuring the base is level and stable.
The supplier will typically handle the transport, lifting and placement expertise. They will advise on feasibility, select the appropriate delivery method and position the container safely where conditions allow.
What to expect on delivery day
On delivery day, the driver will arrive with the container and check the site before unloading. This final check confirms the access route, lifting area and container position.
If a HIAB crane is being used, the vehicle will be set up in a safe location. The crane will then lift the container from the lorry and move it carefully into position. This may involve lifting over an obstacle, lowering the container into a confined space or adjusting the placement so it sits correctly on the prepared base.
Once the container is in place, the delivery team will carry out basic final checks. They may check that the container is sitting level, that the doors can open and close properly, and that the position matches the agreed location as closely as possible.
The process is usually straightforward when the site has been properly assessed and prepared. The key is ensuring access is clear, the base is suitable and any possible restrictions have been discussed before delivery begins.
Is your site suitable for container delivery?
Many sites that look difficult at first can still be suitable for container delivery, especially when a HIAB crane is used.
The best way to find out is to share as much information as possible with your container supplier. Photos, measurements, access details and notes about obstacles can all help build a clear picture of the site.
Useful details include the width of entrances, the distance from the road to the final position, overhead restrictions, ground conditions and whether the container needs to be lifted over anything.
From there, your supplier can assess what is possible and recommend the best delivery method. In some cases, standard delivery may be suitable. In others, HIAB crane delivery may be the safest and most practical option.
With the right preparation and advice, a shipping container can often be delivered exactly where you need it - even when space is limited.
